After visiting a number of Alentejan vineyards over the past few years, we were keen to explore the ‘closer to home’ growing Algarvean wine scene, and so we asked our knowledgeable sommelier Daniela to make a recommendation… and what a great decision that was.
Nestled inland in the picturesque region between Ferragudo and Carvoeiro, Quinta dos Santos offers a delightful escape for those seeking a perfect blend of great food, exquisite wines and craft beer.
Our recent visit to this charming estate was an enchanting experience that unfolded against a backdrop of rolling vineyards and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Conceived in 2015 by the dos Santos family, the estate’s charm is stylishly accentuated by the fresh update on Portuguese architecture that seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings. Leaving behind a successful business in South Africa to pursue a dream, the family, with strong Portuguese connections, acquired an 8-hectare site and in 2016 started to clear the overgrown land. In just four years, Ann and Eugene, together with their sons Greg and Kyle, planted a variety of native Portuguese grapes plus new olive trees alongside the existing ones.
A Esquina, was a culinary journey through the rich flavours of the Algarve
Heavily influenced by Ann’s creative background, they designed and built the winery, brewery and restaurant with architecture based on the old Portuguese style. With thick walls, large windows and arches and a 200-year old olive tree in the central courtyard, the contemporary, light and spacious design made our visit even more memorable.

Our lunch experience at their restaurant, A Esquina, was a culinary journey through the rich flavours of the Algarve. The menu, inspired by local ingredients, offers modern petiscos for sharing or larger main dishes, paired with their own wine, beer or gin-based cocktails. The al-fresco dining area, provided a perfect setting while soaking in the beauty of the vineyard landscape and autumn sunshine. Greg also realised his own ambitions of creating a range of craft beers, which are an easy drink in the Algarve sun, and I can confirm that my lunch companions enjoyed sampling the results.
After a satisfying lunch, it was time to explore the heart of Quinta dos Santos – the vineyards. A guided tour offers insights into the winemaking process, from grape cultivation to the meticulous art of blending. Whilst clearing the land, they discovered an ancient aqueduct system that has been restored with great care. The passionate winemakers shared their knowledge, making the tour not just informative, but also a celebration of the region’s winemaking heritage.
The true highlight of the visit, however, was the wine tasting. In 2020, their own first biodynamic wine was produced, under the Tesouro label. Grape varieties are all native Portuguese, including four reds and four whites.
From crisp, citrusy whites to robust, full-bodied reds, the wines showcased the diversity and excellence of Algarvean viticulture, including a sparkling wine manufactured in the traditional champenoise method. They also select, profile and blend other local grapes into their Escolhido range. The knowledgeable staff guided us through the tasting, providing a deeper appreciation for the nuances of each variety. From our own experiences, this hidden gem, in a beautiful setting, is a perfect destination for dining or the full wine tour and tasting.
