Fresh oysters from the Ria Formosa

Each time we descend into Faro airport, I can’t help but exclaim over the beauty of the shoreline, the magical islands and the aquamarine sea, whilst thinking how fortunate we are to visit such a beautiful part of the world. So I’m thrilled when we decide to take to the sea and enjoy a luxury experience in these stunning waters.

The Algarve WOW Oyster Tasting Tour is an unforgettable three-hour maritime adventure that takes you through the picturesque Ria Formosa to the enchanting island of Culatra. This unique experience combines the excitement of a speedboat ride plus bird watching, with the indulgence of savouring fresh oysters straight from the sea, paired with a fine rosé wine or soft drink.

As our private speedboat makes its way from Faro harbour, through the meandering channels of the Ria Formosa, we are treated to a visual feast of diverse ecosystems. The estuarine lagoons, salt marshes, and barrier islands create a habitat rich in biodiversity, offering glimpses of unique flora and fauna. Paulo, our knowledgeable guide, provides fascinating insights into the ecosystem and bird life, making the journey not only thrilling but educational.

Arriving at Culatra Island, the pace shifts from excitement to relaxation. This tranquil island, part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, is known for its pristine beaches and laidback atmosphere. Our speedboat docks in the island’s small picturesque harbour, alongside the local fisherman’s boats and friendly seagulls exploring today’s catch. We were invited to explore the island’s charms, from its quaint car-free village to its sandy Atlantic shore, whilst our Captain organised the next part of our adventure.

The highlight of the tour is the oyster-tasting experience. The local oyster farms we had passed on our journey around the Culatra Island shore cultivate some of the finest and freshest oysters in the region. The process of breeding, collecting and exporting to leading markets around the world is carefully explained to us. Paulo demonstrated the art of shucking open these delectable molluscs, revealing the succulent treasures within. Guests are invited to indulge in the briny goodness of several of these freshly harvested oysters, enjoying the unique taste that reflects the pristine waters of the Ria Formosa. The combination of the salty sweetness of such fresh oysters with the crisp refreshing rosé wine, whilst taking in the harbour views, created some unique and very special memories.
